Kelly Slater has done it again. I do not think this ninth ASP surfing title was an easy task or more relaxed than the previous eight. The point is - Kelly Slater is surfing better than ever and anyone. Experience, knowledge of the event's waves and tactical routines are moving him to a celestial level. I can hardly believe he won't be turning in the lineup in 2009. The number 10 is always a mark. He knows that and I'll give him two years in top form to clinch the 10th ASP World Championship. That could be done in 2010. Interesting, hum? Luis MP

They are on their way to share the prize of the year. Kelly Slater and Antoine Albeau are scoring consecutive wins, despite all the words written about their age. The surfer is enjoying one of his best WCT years - even though Tiago Pires delayed Slater's highway to the 2008 Dream Tour title - and shows that he is perfectly capable of reaching the 10th title. His surfing is more relaxed and he no longer has to prove that he is one the most complete sportsmen in the world. Like Kelly Slater, the french windsurf tornado, Antoine Albeau is having one great year. A clean sheet in the PWA World Tour and owning the title of fastest windsurfer in the world (49.09 knots) are enough to put Albeau in the history of windsurfing. Self-determination is the best way to describe winners like Kelly Slater and Antoine Albeau. And that is why 2008 will be their year, indeed. Regards, Luis MP

In the past months, SurferToday.com has been very interested in the multiple world speed sailing records. Windsurfing is more and more competitive. Antoine Albeau (NeilPryde/Starboard), the french eagle, has set a new world record, after breaking Finian Maynard's 48.70 knots (90,1 km/h) achieved in April 2005, in Les Saintes Maries de la Mer, France. Almost three years after, in late March and in the same location, Albeau reached 49,09 knots (90,91 km/h) in a 500 metre built canal. It is an absolutely amazing achievement, but we all dream of the 50 knots' mark (92,6 km/h). We really have to, as we all know it is possible. Antoine has a great opportunity to make history, even though there are a handful of windsurfers who can do it. First, the aim will be 92,6 km/h. Then, we'll think of the 100 km/h mark. Can you imagine? Regards,

Windsurfing is one the most popular 'classic' watersports in the world. A few decades ago, windsurfing had an associated social status stigma. Boards and sails were a bit expensive and not everyone had a car set to transport the then heavy gear. It was fun to windsurf in Spain, France and Italy in the mid-80's. Today, a lot has changed in the windsurfing scene. The sport is lot more competitive, wide, trick and speed oriented and opened to every social layer of the population. Windsurfing is also 'lighter' and easier to move from one place to another, a very important issue as in the past you had to be fit to windsurf. :) A couple weeks ago, I have had my first windsurfing session. And it was a very successful one, maybe because I've been surfing for 18 years and I have a sailing experience. You should try it. Modern windsurfing is very enjoyable and you can practice it when waves are against you or simply do not exist. Regards,

Finally, my surfing holidays have arrived. It's time to pack my dearest things/gear and head to the amazing beaches of the South of Portugal. Oh, yes, we are also known for the sun and waves, besides Jose Mourinho. :) I am really looking forward to pack everything up. And I will travel with my friends so partying is definitely going to happen. We are chasing 'that' spring wave, full of sun, awesome landscapes, warm water and small villages. We are very tired of cities, cars and working routines... And, we all dream of an unforgettable surf session and long sunset days discussing what has been the quality of our surfing. Having no plans for tomorrow and no meteo web searches... I will be back in a week to tell you how it was. ...And make sure you're also packing for the surfing holidays of your life. Aloha,
Luis MP |
